Vintage Navajo Robin's Egg Turquoise Ring Midcentury Handcrafted Silver Tribal Southwestern Jewelry

This charming mid-20th century silver turquoise ring is a classic example of authentic traditional Navajo Native American silversmithing before the introduction of more streamlined modern production methods after the advent of the tourist trade. Handcrafted in unmarked silver (testing as sterling), it centres on a vivid sky blue turquoise cabochon in a colour historically associated with Arizona deposits found in the Sleeping Beauty or Kingman mines - sources widely favoured by Navajo silversmiths for their stable colour and ability to take high polish. The domed gemstone is set within a hand cut serrated (sawtooth) bezel, and framed by sculptural flower petals juxtaposing oxidised silver with hand applied raised borders and spherical accent drops – a typical Navajo design. The absence of a maker’s hallmark is entirely consistent with the post-war period - tribal jewellers were not required to hallmark their wares until the 1980s. While many contemporary Native artists sign their work, earlier pieces like this ring tended to be produced within family or workshop traditions where the identity of the individual maker was secondary to the continuity of the craft itself.

DIMENSIONS, TECHNIQUES, MATERIALS The ring is a UK size O and a USA size 7, and weighs 3 grams. The band is 2.5mm wide and the interior diameter is 16.6mm. The turquoise gemstone measures approximately 9 x 7 mm. The face measures 0.5 x 0.5 inches. It is built in traditional Navajo bench technique rather than by casting, and its details reveal the sequence of fabrication: cutting the backplate from sheet silver, forming and soldering the decorative elements, setting the turquoise, and finally shaping and attaching the split shank to the back plate. Each stage required skilled handwork and careful control of heat and solder. The turquoise is cut as a high-domed cabochon with a vivid sky blue colour and minimal visible matrix. Stones of this character were widely favoured in Native jewellery during the mid-twentieth century, particularly material from Arizona deposits which produced turquoise prized for its stability and pure colour, qualities that allowed silversmiths to highlight the stone as the central visual element of a piece.

The applied silver drops and floral elements are intact, and the split shank remains well aligned.
